West Coast Swing Level 1 (Basics)

West Coast Swing (WCS) is the official California state dance, born here in the 1940’s. There are various stories of how WCS evolved from Lindy Hop. Some say it was dancer Dean Collins in Hollywood who modified the dance for better camera shots. Others say that when the Big Band era ended, dancers moved to blues clubs and changed Lindy Hop to fit the smaller spaces and slower music.

Whatever its true origins, this new dance was popularized in the 1950’s by Arthur Murray dance studios and teacher Skippy Blair. Today it’s widely danced throughout the United States and Canada. WCS is known for its smooth and sexy style and can be danced to a broad range of music, including contemporary pop, blues, and R&B.

Come learn how to swing, West Coast style! Absolutely no dance experience or partner required.
